DVD & Blu-Ray Buying Guides: The DPP 33

This is a DVD & Blu-Ray buying guide to the 33 films either not prosecuted or unsuccessfully prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act (Video Nasties). Subsequently some of the following films have either been approved for release by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in either a cut or uncut form, while some are still banned (generally because they have not been re-submitted for classification).

The Beyond (1981)

AKA: L'Aldila; Seven Doors of Death; E tu Vivrai nel Terrore: L'Aldila; And You Will Live in Terror: The Beyond
  • The current best release seems to be the Blu-Ray from Grindhouse which is region A only.
  • Arrow's Blu-Ray is very close in terms of extras and quality and is region free if you don't have a mult-region player. The 3-disc is getting very expensive so you may have to go for the 2-disc steelbook instead.

Label:Grindhouse Releasing
Format:Blu-Ray

Ratio:2.4:1 (non-anamorphic, letterboxed)
Audio:English 5.1 | English 2.0 | English mono | Italian mono (English subtitles)

Extras:Booklet | Commentaries | Interviews | Gianetto Di Rossi featurette | Trailer
Notes:3 discs (except steelbook which is 2). Make sure you get the fixed version with the correctly coloured opening sequence. All new copies should be fine but check with the sellers of second-hand copies.

The Boogey Man (1980)

AKA: Ulli Lommel's Boogeyman; The Boogey Man; The Bogey Man
  • The Blu-Ray releases from 88 Films or CMV Laservision win the day, although the 88 Films is probably easier to source and is region-free.
  • 88 Films also do a DVD.
  • The Sony and Anchor Bay DVD releases seem to have problems with either stretching or cropping.

Label:88 Films
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:1:21:54
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:Interview | Trailer | TV spots | Gallery

Region:B
Length:
Ratio:1.78:1
Audio:English mono | German mono
Extras:Commentary (in German) | Interview | Trailers | TV spots | Gallery
Notes:The biggest bonus is probably the Soundtrack CD that comes with this package.

Cannibal Terror (1980)

AKA: Terreur Cannibale
  • The Severin DVD wins.

Label:Severin Films
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:93:34
Ratio:1.66:1
Audio:English mono | French mono
Extras:Deleted scene | Trailer
Notes:You can even get a double bill DVD with Jess Franco's "Devil Hunter" signed by Alain Deruelle, the Cannibal Terror director, from the Severin site. Just remember that all the signatures and extras in the world can never make Cannibal Terror a better film :)

Contamination (1980)

AKA: Contaminazione; Alien Contamination; Alien 2; Astaron Strut des Scheckens; Toxic Spawn
  • The region-free Arrow Blu-ray is the winner.

Label:Arrow Video
Format:Blu-Ray/DVD
Region:0
Length:1:35:20
Ratio:1.85:1 (anamorphic)
Audio:English mono | Italian mono (English)
Extras:Commentary | Behind-the-scenes footage | Q&A | Interviews | Featurettes | Trailer | Graphic novel

Dead & Buried (1981)

AKA: Dead and Buried
  • The Blue Underground Blu-Ray wins although if you want the original mono soundtrack you'll have to go with the UK Anchor Bay DVD

Label:Blue Underground
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:1:33:59
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English 7.1 | English 5.1
Extras:Commentaries | Featurettes | Trailers
Notes:

Eaten Alive (1977)

AKA: Death Trap; Eaten Alive; Brutes and Savages; Legend of the Bayou; Murder on the Bayou; Starlight Slaughter Motel; Slaughter Motel; Horror Hotel; Horror Hotel Massacre; Amok
  • An easy one; Arrow's Blu-ray is the best release out there.
  • If you do want a DVD then go for the region 1 Dark Sky Films release.

Label:Arrow Video
Format:Blu-ray/DVD combo
Region:0
Length:1:30:52
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English
Extras:Commentary | Interviews | Featurettes | Alternate title sequence | Slideshow | Gallery | Trailers | TV & Radio spots
Notes:2 discs

Deep River Savages (1972)

AKA: Man from Deep River; Deep River Savages; Il Paese del sesso selvaggio; The Man from Deep River; Nel Paese del Sesso Selvaggi; Au Pays del'Exorcisme; Mondo Cannibale; Sacrifice
  • Normally I'd say that the Shriek Show release is the best of a bad bunch but I've read that it's RCE-encoded so won't play outside the US, even on region-free players. This seems a bit odd for a low budget film on a small label so I'm going to list it, but if anyone can verify that it won't play on a region-free player please let me know.
  • The UK versions are cut by 3:45 (animal cruelty) so go for an international release if you want a totally uncut film. 88 Films are supposed to be releasing it on Blu-Ray in February 2016 with the 3:45 cuts in place.
  • Raro were supposed to be releasing Deep River Savages on Blu-Ray but nothing seems to be happening.

Label:Shriek Show
Format:DVD
Region:1
Length:93:06
Ratio:2.30:1
Audio:Italian mono (forced English subtitles) | English mono
Extras:Interview | Slideshow | Trailers
Notes:Possibly RCE-Encoded - you have been warned!

Delirium (1979)

AKA: Psycho Puppet
  • This is a tough one. Never officially released on DVD in the UK even though the BBFC later passed it without cuts. The only copy I could find was a Twisted Danger pirate release but at least it's cheap.

Label:Twisted Danger
Format:DVD-R
Region:0 (I assume)
Length:84
Ratio:4:3
Audio:English
Extras:None that I can see
Notes:Pirate copy

Don’t Go in the House (1980)

AKA:
  • If you want a Blu-ray then the Subkultur release is for you. If you want a DVD then...
  • The Shriek Show release wins out over the pretty bare-bones Arrow as far as extras go, but the transfer may not be as good as the Arrow.
  • If you need a R1 and don't care for the extra then go for the Arrow release.
  • There are rumours of a Subkultur Blu-Ray release.

Label:Subkultur Entertainment
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:B
Length:1.22.48
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English mono | German mono (English, German subtitles)
Extras:Commentary | Interviews | Open matte version of the film | Alternate title sequence | Gallery | Trailers
Notes:

Label:Shriek Show/Media Blasters
Format:DVD
Region:1
Length:1:22:54
Ratio:1.85:1 (anamorphic) (see notes)
Audio:English mono
Extras:Commentary | Introduction | Interview | Featurette | Trailers
Notes:DVDBeaver says "Shriek Show has once again marred their dual-layer, high bitrate transfer by giving it an interlaced encoding (although sourced from a European master - courtesy of German sales company Atlas International - it runs at the correct 24fps projection speed). A note at the beginning states that it is presented at 1.85:1 as per the cinematographer's wishes. It's closer to 1.80:1, and it seems like a sliver of matte was added to the top and bottom of the frame to a 1.78:1 transfer since the Atlas logo is slightly cropped."

Label:ArrowDrome
Format:DVD
Region:2
Length:1:19:39
Ratio:1.85:1 (anamorphic)
Audio:English mono
Extras:Trailer | Booklet
Notes:The best picture of all the DVD releases.

Don’t Go Near the Park (1981)

AKA: Nightstalker
  • The Dark Sky DVD wins out over the Anchor bay "Box of the Banned 2" release.
  • Unless you need R2 in which case you have to plump for the "Box of the Banned 2", which also has "Tenebre", "Contamination", "Don’t Go Near The Park", "The Witch Who Came From The Sea" and "Evilspeak" in it and all uncut. Worth it just for the hard to find TWWCFTS.

Label:Dark Sky Films
Format:DVD
Region:1
Length:
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:Commentary | Deleted scenes | Gallery | Trailers | TV spot
Notes:

Don't Look in the Basement (1973)

AKA: The Forgotten; Death Ward 13; Don't Go in the Basement
  • There are loads of releases for this film as I believe it's in the public domain, but the VCI Grindhouse double feature (with "Don't Open the Door") has the correct aspect ratio. Again don't let Amazon put you off with its prices - look elsewhere (DiabolikDVD has it for $12.99).
  • If you want R2 or R0 there are plenty of other releases but most are sourced from VHS.

Label:VCI
Format:DVD
Region:1
Length:89:05
Ratio:1.85:1 (anamorphic)
Audio:English mono
Extras:Trailers
Notes:Double pack along with "Don't Open the Door"

The Evil Dead (1981)

AKA: Book of the Dead
  • The best version is the US Anchor Bay 2-disc "Limited Edition" which has more extras but is now OoP and region locked. Beware of the single disc that this was replaced with as it has no extras. Look for the green "Limited Edition" banner at the top of the case.
  • Else, go for any of the other Blu-Rays as they're all pretty much the same.
  • If you want a DVD then go for the R1 Anchor Bay "Ultimate Edition" edition or the UK R2 "Book of the Dead".
  • As far as I can see there is no single perfect release of this film. If you want everything then I think you'll need both the "Limited Edition" Blu-Ray and the "Ultimate Edition" DVD.

Label:Anchor Bay
Format:Blu-Ray/DVD
Region:A
Length:
Ratio:1.85:1 | 1.33:1
Audio:English 5.1 | French mono
Extras:Documentaries | Featurettes | Trailers | TV spots | Gallery
Notes:You can view the film in two aspect ratios (the original being 1.33:1).

Frozen Scream (1975)

AKA:
  • The only version I can find that still in print is the Vinegar Syndrome release. This is a double bill with "The Executioner, Part II" as part of their Drive-in Collection.
  • There is an OOP R2 DVD on the Laser Paradise label if you can find it.
  • Still banned in the UK.

Label:Vinegar Syndrome
Format:DVD
Region:0
Length:78:42
Ratio:1.78:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:"The Executioner, Part II" | Interview with the director of "The Executioner, Part II" | Trailer for "The Executioner, Part II"
Notes:There are no "Frozen Scream" specific extras.

The Funhouse (1981)

AKA: The Funhouse: Carnival of Terror; Carnival of Terror
  • Arrow just about beats the Scream Factory release due to multiple commentaries and being region-free (edit: apparently only initial the pressing of Arrow's release was region-free), although the US release doe have an additional 5.1 soundtrack and it's commentary is by Tobe Hooper.
  • If you want a DVD then the Scream Factory release is the way to go for the extras, but it is region 1 locked.

Label:Arrow Video
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:95:14
Ratio:2.35:1
Audio:English stereo
Extras:Commentaries | Featurettes | Gallery | Trailer | Poster | Booklet

Length:95:13
Ratio:2.35:1
Audio:English 5.1 | English stereo
Extras:Commentary | Interviews | TV & radio spots
Notes:

Human Experiments (1979)

AKA: Beyond the Gate; Women in Prison
  • Not available as an official DVD release anywhere so you're going to have to get a dodgy pirate copy sourced from VHS.
  • Scorpion Releasing are planning a region 0 DVD release but there's nothing yet.
  • Code Red were planning a DVD at some point but nothing has materialised.
  • Never released in the UK.

Label:Black Label
Format:DVD-R
Region:0 (I assume)
Length:Unknown
Ratio:Unknown
Audio:Unknown
Extras:Unknown
Notes:Pirate copy.

I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses (1978)

AKA: Drop Dead Dearest; Left for Dead
  • Passed in the with 1:06 seconds of cuts but there is no UK DVD release.
  • There is a UK pirate copy taken from the "Left for Dead" release which says is 87 minutes long which is much longer than the UK released Heron VHS at 82m 29s and seems to be around the correct length. It's cheap and may be worth a look.

Label:STOJO
Format:DVD-R
Region:0 (I assume)
Length:87
Ratio:Unknown
Audio:Unknown
Extras:Unknown
Notes:Pirate copy.

Inferno (1980)

AKA: Dario Argento's Inferno; Horror Infernal
  • A new contender from Camera Obscura/Koch Media! This 3 disc release picks up the honours for best picture and there's a new set of extras including a 98 min documentary. It is, as with all Camera Obscura releases, expensive though.
  • Argh! Get both the Arrow and Blue Underground. I guess the Blue Underground has less DNR so may look a little better, the Arrow on the other-hand has shit loads of extras but only if you get the 2-disc edition. If that's a little too expensive then go for the Blue Underground.
  • If you need a DVD then the Arrow R2 2-disc set is the one.

Label:Camera Obscura/Koch Media
Format:Blu-Ray/DVD
Region:0
Length:107
Ratio:1.85:1 (anamorphic)

Notes:2 discs. Note that the single disc re-release does not have some of the extras including the documentary.

Killer Nun (1979)

AKA: Deadly Habit; Suor Omicidi
  • The Blue Underground Blu-Ray wins.
  • If you need a DVD then either the UK Shameless or US Blue Underground are fine. Both are region-free but neither have the Italian soundtrack.

Label:Blue Underground
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English mono | Italian mono
Extras:Interview | Trailer | Gallery

Late Night Trains (1975)

AKA: Late Night Trains; Night Train Murders; Last Stop on the Night Train; L'Ultimo Treno della Notte; Don't Ride on Late Night Trains; Torture Train; L'ultimo treno della notte; Night Train - Der Letzte Zug in der Nacht; The New House on the Left
  • I'd probably go for the 88 Films Blu-Ray for the Italian soundtrack but I already own the Blue Underground blu and it's excellent.
  • The Blue Underground DVD is a fine replacement for people without a Blu-Ray player and it has the same extras as on the blu.

Label:88 Films
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:94:03
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English mono | Italian mono
Extras:Interviews | Trailers | Booklet

  • The Blue Underground Blu-ray wins with the same extras as on it's older DVD release but with a better picture and a 7.1 soundtrack for those who want it.
  • For those who want a DVD go for the Blue Underground release with its new transfer and mono soundtrack.

Label:Blue Underground
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:92:50
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English 7.1 | English 5.1 | English mono
Extras:Documentary | Interviews | Trailers | TV & radio spots | Gallery
Notes:

Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1982)

AKA: Nightmare Maker; Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker; Night Warning; Evil Protege; Momma's Boy; Thrilled to Death
  • Code Red does it again.

Label:Code Red
Format:DVD
Region:0
Length:
Ratio:1.78:1
Audio:English
Extras:Commentaries | Trailer | Interview
Notes:New master taken from the original negatives

Possession (1981)

AKA: The Night the Screaming Stops
  • The Mondo Vision region-free Blu-Ray is the one to get if you can find it. Created using the same master as the UK Second Sight blu but apparently a little better picture-wise with most of the same extras, it is expensive however and comes in several packages. Obviously go for the Second Sight region B otherwise.
  • If you want a DVD then go for either the German R2 from Bildstörung or the UK R2 from Second Sight with the Bildstörung slightly in front as far as extras are concerned.

Label:Mondo Vision
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:124
Ratio:1.66:1
Audio:English mono (English, French, and Spanish subtitles) | Unauthorised alternate audio with different score
Extras:Commentary | Documentary | Interviews | Trailers | Soundtrack CD | Booklet
Notes:Available from DiabolikDVD and amazon.com in three versions. I think all versions have the same contents apart from a soundtrack CD which only comes with the limited edition (2000 units).

Label:Second Sight
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:B
Length:124
Ratio:1.66:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:Commentaries | Documentary | Interviews | Featurettes
Notes:One more commentary and a few featurettes compared to the Mondo Vison release.

Pranks (1982)

AKA: Pranks; The Dorm that Dripped Blood; Death Dorm
  • The Synapse Blu-ray wins with a restoration taken from the only remaining 35mm answer print of the director's cut that was lost for 30 years. From what I can see the picture quality is way better than the current DVDs. This does mean however that this cut may be different to the one you remember or have on DVD/VHS. This is the very fist cut of the film before being submitted to the US distributor. Oh, and you get a DVD copy with the package.
  • If you really want the other cut then you'll have to find a VHS copy as both all previous DVD releases are taken from the cut UK version.
  • Cut in the UK by 10 seconds.

Label:Synapse Films
Format:Blu-Ray/DVD combo
Region:0
Length:
Ratio:1.66:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:Commentary | Featurettes | Isolated music score | Trailers
Notes:As far as I know this is the only uncut, non-pirated, version.

The Mountain of the Cannibal God (1978)

AKA: Prisoner of the Cannibal God; Slave of the Cannibal God; La Montagna del dio Cannibale; The Mountain of the Cannibal God
  • Go for the Blue Underground R0 DVD as it contains the longest version there is with previously unseen footage.
  • The Anchor Bay R0 DVD is identical to the Blue Underground but is now OOP.
  • The Italian release from No Shame is also worth checking out for the 46 minute documentary but it is in Italian.
  • The French release from Neo also has good extras but has forced French subtitles and the extras are not English-friendly.
  • Cut in the UK by 2:06 (animal cruelty).

Label:Blue Underground
Format:DVD
Region:0
Length:102:48
Ratio:2.35:1 (Anamorphic)
Audio:English mono
Extras:Featurette | Gallery | Trailer
Notes:

Revenge of the Bogeyman (1983)

AKA: Revenge of the Bogeyman; Revenge of the Boogeyman; Boogeyman II; The Boogey Man 2; The Boogeyman 2; Bogeyman 2; Bogeyman 2 Redux
  • The R0 DVD from Gemstone Entertainment wins.
  • Stay away from the Image Entertainment DVD as it looks like Ulli Lommel has pulled a George Lucas and edited the original film, including adding new scenes staring himself. Maybe worth getting as a curiosity but this is not the origional video nasty film.
  • This film has never been released in the UK in it's original form.
  • Beware the 2008 film staring Tobin Bell with the same title!

Label:Gemstone Entertainment
Format:DVD
Region:0
Length:
Ratio:1.33:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:Trivia | Biography | Filmography
Notes:

The Slayer (1982)

AKA: Nightmare Island
  • There are only two releases and, apart from the cover, they are identical. So go for either the Vipco or the Cornerstone. I've listed the Cornerstone as it's the one I have.
  • The picture quality is of typical Vipco standard - shit.

Label:Cornerstone Media
Format:DVD
Region:2
Length:86
Ratio:1.33:1
Audio:English
Extras:Non-related trailers | Gallery of stills
Notes:This is a full frame open matte transfer at 1.33:1 that should have been trimmed down to the 1.85:1 ration used in the theatres.

The Toolbox Murders (1978)

AKA: Night School
  • The region-free Blue Underground Blu-Ray is the best.
  • Blue Underground also do a R0 DVD if that's your thing.
  • Cut in the UK by 1:45. Step away from the Vipco! Step away from the Vipco! Nothing to see here!

Label:Blue Underground
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:93:49

Unhinged (1982)

AKA:
  • Get the region-free 88 Films DVD.

Label:88 Films
Format:DVD
Region:0
Length:1:16:03
Ratio:1.33:1 | 1.70:1

Extras:Commentary | Trailers
Notes:Watch the original 1.33:1 version as the widescreen seems to suffer cropping issues.

Visiting Hours (1982)

AKA: The Fright; Get Well Soon; Terreur a l'hopital central
  • Get the Scream Factory double bill Blu-Ray. The extras on the blu are better than their old DVD release.
  • UPDATE: There is a Spanish region B Blu-Ray but I have no details and am assuming that there are no cuts.
  • The specs below are just for "Visiting Hours" and not for "Bad Dreams".
  • If you want a DVD then the Scream Factory or Anchor Bay releases are pretty similar and both are R1.

Label:Scream Factory
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:A
Length:
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:78 minutes worth of Interviews | Gallery | TV & radio spots
Notes:Double bill with "Bad Dreams"

The Witch Who Came from the Sea (1976)

AKA: The Fright; Get Well Soon; Terreur a l'hopital central
  • I'll go for the R1 Subversive DVD over the Anchor Bay R2 (from The Box of the Banned 2) because of the extras. However...
  • There's a newish release from Cinema Epoch that uses the original 35mm materials plus it has loads of extras. I have not seen this version and cannot find much out about it. It is available on Amazon though.
  • Arrow have just announced a Blu-Ray that will be part of a three film box. The current release date is 22nd February 2016 UK, 23rd February 2016 US. Click here for more goodness.

Label:Subversive
Format:DVD

Extras:Commentary | Documentary | Trailers
Notes:

Women Behind Bars (1975)

AKA: Des Diamants pour L'Enfer; Vias pour Mourir; Prison Sado pour Femmes; Punition Cell
  • Because of the reasons below I'm going with the Blue Underground DVD.
  • The German X Rated Kult DVD does look nice and has a long interview with Jess Franco but it's in French with no English subtitles. As well as English It also has German and French soundtracks, again without subtitles. If you're a French/German Speaker then I'd give this release some serious consideration.

Label:Blue Underground
Format:DVD
Region:0
Length:
Ratio:2.35:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:Interview | Trailer
Notes:

Zombie Creeping Flesh (1980)

  • Get the Blu_Ray from Blue Underground. It has the same extras as their earlier DVD release plus it's a double bill with "Rats: Night of Terror".
  • On DVD either the Blue Underground or Anchor Bay DVDs will serve. Both are region-free.

Label:Blue Underground
