DVD & Blu-Ray Buying Guides: The DPP 39

This is a DVD & Blu-Ray buying guide to the 39 films successfully prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act (Video Nasties). Subsequently some of the following films have either been approved for release by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in either a cut or uncut form, while some are still banned (generally because they have not been re-submitted for classification).

Absurd (1981)

AKA: Monster Hunter; Absurd; Anthropophagous 2; Rosso Sangue; Horrible; Monster Hunter; The Grim Reaper 2; Zombie 6: Monster Hunter
  • It seems that the MYA DVD release is still the version to get.
  • UPDATE: 88 Films have announced that they will be starting a 2k restoration crowdfund. Unfortunately they made the mistake of announcing this on April Fools day. However, I believe that it's true. I hate April Fool's day!
Label:MYA
Format:DVD
Region:1
Length:94
Ratio:1.66:1 (non-anamorphic, letterboxed)
Audio:English Dolby Digital mono mix
Italian Dolby Digital mono mix (no subtitles)

Anthropophagus (1980)

AKA: The Anthropophagous Beast; Anthropophagous; Anthropophagous the Beast; Anthropophagus; Antropofago; The Beast Anthropophagous; The Grim Reaper; Man Eater; Man Beast; Savage Island; Gomia, Terror en el Mar Egeo
  • In the UK at least the 88 Films release seems to be the way to go as it supposedly has the best picture quality.
  • Otherwise there is the 2-disc DVD (R1) Media Blasters release or the 2-disc DVD (R2) Beat Records release.
  • Stay away from dodgy UK DVDs named The Grim Reaper as they are cut to ribbons.
Label:88 Films
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:2
Length:86:08 (apparently uncut but it does seem to be over a minute shorter than the other Euro releases)
Ratio:1.66 (pillarboxed)
Audio:English mono
Italian mono (English subtitles)
Extras:42nd Street Memories - feature length documentary (not connected to Anthropophagous) | Trailer
Notes:The opening scene with the German tourists is not subtitled or dubbed into English. There is a DVD (R2) release by the same company.

Axe (1974)

AKA: Axe; California Axe Murders; Lisa Lisa; The Axe Murders; The Virgin Slaughter
  • If you can wait until December 2015 the best release is going to most definitely be the Severin Film's Blu-Ray (they do a single disc DVD as well) - a new transfer, loads of extras, plus if you order from the Severin site you get it signed by the director!
  • Otherwise it's a toss-up between the R1 and the R2 although the R1 seems to have slightly better extras.
Label:Severin Films
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0 (I think as all their others are)
Length:
Ratio:1.85:1 (I think this is the original ratio)

Italian mono (English subtitles)
Extras:Commentary | "Kidnapped Coed" feature with commentary | "Bloody Brothers" feature with commentary | Documentary | Two other featurettes | Trailers, TV Spots & Radio Spots | Soundtrack cd

Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English mono (English subtitles)

The Beast in Heat (1977)

AKA: SS Hell Camp; La bestia in calore; Horrifying Experiments of the S.S. Last Days; SS Experiment Part 2
  • Still banned in the UK so an import is the only way to go.
  • The Media Blasters DVD seems to be the best version but is region 1.
  • Else, there is a Scandinavian release for R2
Label:Media Blasters
Format:DVD
Region:1
Length:
Ratio:1.85:1 (anamorphic)
Audio:English mono
Extras:Trailer | other Media Blasters trailers | Photo gallery | Liner notes

Ratio:1.85:1 (anamorphic)
Audio:English 2.0 (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish subtitles)
Extras:Trailers | Booklet in Danish
Notes:It is possible that this release does have a scene that could be missing from the US release (see the notes for the Media Blasters release above) but it's uncorroborated.

Blood Feast (1963)

AKA: Egyptian Blood Feast; Feast of Flesh
  • Blood Feast is on Blu-Ray! The Something Weird release is the one to get. Plus you get the two other HG Lewis films in Blood trilogy (Color Me Red | Two Thousand Maniacs). Allegedly it's region free or at least A/B but don't come crying to me if it doesn't work.
  • Otherwise the Something Weird DVD is region free and has nice extras.
  • There are rumours of an Arrow Blu-Ray in the near future.
Label:Something Weird
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:A/B/?
Length:
Ratio:1.78:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:Commentaries with HG Lewis! | Outakes | Featurettes | Gallery | Trailers
Notes:All three films have been compressed onto one disc but all reviews note a marked improvement over previous DVD releases. The region lock can be bypassed using the "top menu" trick.

The Ghastly Ones (1968)

AKA: Blood Rites
  • Not a lot of choice here so the R1 Something Weird DVD wins.
  • There does not seem to be a R2 or R0 release.
Label:Something Weird
Format:DVD
Region:1
Length:77:54
Ratio:1.33:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:Bonus feature "Seeds of Sin" | Deleted footage | Unfinished trailer | Trailers | Gallery
Notes:

Bloody Moon (1981)

AKA: Collegialas Violadas; Profonde Tenebre; Die Saege des Todes
  • Another easy one as Severin have released what seems to be a fantastic region-free Blu-Ray.
  • Else the Severin DVD for non-Blu-Ray users.
  • Do not buy the Vipco release as it's cut by a hefty 1:20.
Label:Severin Films
Format:Blu-Ray
Region:0
Length:
Ratio:1.78:1
Audio:English mono
Extras:Interview with Jess Franco | Trailer
Notes:There are a few seconds of spliced in bloody scenes that seem to have been taken from a lower quality format (VHS?).

The Burning (1981)

AKA: Cropsy
  • If you have a region-free Blu-Ray player then get the Scream Factory release. As far as I know this is the only Blu-Ray release. This release should come with a DVD of the movie which is region 1 locked and I have no idea if the extras are included on this disc.
  • UPDATE: I've been made aware that there is an Australian Blu-Ray from Cult Epics which is region B locked.
  • Else, for non-region-free europeans there is an uncut Vipco release but knowing their reputation I'd stay away from it and go for the one from Blackhorse.
  • UPDATE: Arrow have announced a Blu-Ray release. No date as of yet.
Label:Scream Factory

Cannibal Apocalypse (1980)

AKA: Cannibal Apocalypse; Apocalisse Domani; The Cannibals are in the Streets; Invasion of the Flesh Hunters; Savage Apocalypse; Slaughterers; Cannibals in the City
  • The region 1 Image entertainment DVD is the best you'll get.
  • Note that the UK Cinema Club and Optimum releases are cut by 2 seconds (animal cruelty) as required by the BBFC. To get the uncut you'll need to go outside the UK.
Label:Image Entertainment
Format:DVD
Region:1
Length:
Ratio:1.66:1 (anamorphic)
Audio:English mono
Extras:Featurettes | Alternate scene | Gallery | Filmographies | Cut scenes | Trailers | Liner notes | Easter eggs

Cannibal Ferox (1981)

AKA: Cannibal Feroz; Make them Die Slowly; Let them Die Slowly; Woman from Deep River; Die Rache der Kannibalen
  • If you have a region-free Blu-ray player then the 3-disc Grindhouse release has a huge amount of extras.
  • Else, there is a region-free Grindhouse DVD or the Danish AWE that I own.
  • Still heavily cut (nearly 7 minutes) in the UK so look elsewhere.

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

AKA: Cannibal Massaker; Holocausto Cannibal; Nackt und Zerfeischt
  • The region-free Grindhouse is the one to go for. Do not be put off by the high Amazon prices, use DiabolikDVD or such like.
  • The Shameless Blu-Ray is a fine substitute if you don't mind the missing 15 seconds.
  • UK copies are cut by 15 seconds (animal cruelty).
Label:Grindhouse Releasing

The Cannibal Man (1973)

AKA: The Apartment on the 13th Floor; La Semana del Asesino; Week of the Killer
  • The Subkultur Entertainment release is supposed to be very nice indeed.
  • As for the other Blue Underground, Anchor Bay and XT DVD releases, I believe they are all pretty much the same.
Label:Subkultur Entertainment

Don’t Go In the Woods (1981)

AKA: Don't Go in the Woods ...Alone!
  • It's a toss-up between the Vinegar Syndrome and the 88 Films releases as both use the same master and both are region-free. It all depends on which extras you prefer.
  • If you want a DVD then go with the Vinegar Syndrome DVD instead.
Label:Vinegar Syndrome
Format:Blu-Ray

The Driller Killer (1979)

AKA: Driller Killer
  • The 2 disc Cult Epics DVD wins through the number of extras.
  • The UK ILC Prime DVD is ok, uncut and can be had for £0.01 if you want cheap and cheerful.
Label:Cult Epics
Format:DVD
Region:0
Length:
Ratio:1.85:1
Audio:English mono (French and Spanish subtitles)
Extras:Commentary | Trailer | Commercial | Filmography | Short films by Abel Ferrara | Interview | Booklet
Notes:2 disc. Limited to 10000 copies (why do they bother?).

Evilspeak (1981)

AKA: Evilspeaks
  • The best version seems to be the Scream Factory Blu-Ray as it has both versions of the film plus the extras from the Code Red DVD. It is however region locked and still missing the 10 minutes of previously cut exposition footage available on the UK Anchor Bay release.
  • Both the UK Anchor Bay and the US Code Red DVD have loads of extras but I went for the UK 2-disc edition for the 10 minutes of footage not on any US release; it's only fault is the lack of the original mono soundtrack.
  • Do not buy the UK Prism DVD as it has multiple cuts.
  • 88 Films are releasing Evilspeak on Blu-Ray in the UK.

The House on Straw Hill (1976)

AKA: Exposé; House on Straw Hill; The House on Straw Hill; Trauma
  • The Severin R0 Blu-Ray is the one to get as it collects every extra from the UK releases and is uncut. It also includes the "Ban the Sadist Videos" documentaries from the Anchor Bay "Box of the Banned" box sets!
  • All UK releases are currently cut by 51 seconds.

Extras:Commentary | Interview | Trailer | "Ban the Sadist Videos" documentaries | Short documentary
Notes:

Faces of Death (1978)

AKA: The Original Faces of Death
  • The US region A Gorgon Blu-Ray seems the best but is missing the "Faces of Death: Fact or Fiction?" documentary which runs at 38:53.
  • Else, for DVDs get either the MPI (R1) or the Njutafilm (R2) "30th Anniversary Edition". The xtras are the same as on the Blu-Ray.
  • For some reason the R0 Gorgon DVD release has no extras except the documentary which is missing from the same company's Blu-Ray! This doc is also available on the Australian (R4) Umbrella and the German (R2) RetroFilm DVDs.
  • All UK versions are cut by 2:19.

AKA: Frankenstein; Andy Warhol's Frankenstein; Il Mostro e in Tavola... Barone Frankenstein; Carne per Frankenstein; Chair pour Frankenstein; Andy Warhol's Young Frankenstein; De la chair pour Frankenstein; The Devil and Dr. Frankenstein; The Frankenstein Experiment; Up Frankenstein
  • The Criterion DVD has the quality transfer.
  • There is an Australian Blu-Ray by Cinema Cult but according to reviews it's pretty bad quality.
  • There is also a German double pack of Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula that's very cheap for people that want both films but don't care about the quality so much.
Label:Criterion
Format:DVD
Region:0
Length:95:09

Toxic Zombies (1980)

AKA: Forest of Fear; Blood Butchers; Blood Eaters; Toxic Zombies
  • I can find only one release on DVD and that's the one on Substance/Televista which looks like a shoddy bootleg sourced from VHS.
  • There is a long OOP R2 DVD from Germany on the Retrofilms label if you can find it.
  • Unreleased in the UK.
Label:Substance/Televista
Format:DVD
Region:1
Length:89

Gestapo’s Last Orgy (1977)

AKA: L'Ultima Orgia del III Reich; Bourreaux SS; Last Orgy of the Third Reich; Des Filles pour le Bourreau; Caligula Reincarnated as Hitler
  • After much digging at the bottom of the internet I've discovered that the Intervision relase is the best and comes with a 36 minute interview with Dr Marcus Stiglegger about the naziploitation sub-genre.
  • Apparently the Extreme Digital release is slightly cut.
  • Still banned in the UK.

The House by the Cemetery (1981)

AKA: The House Outside the Cemetery; Quella Villa Accanto al Cimitero
  • I'm going to have to go with the Blue Underground release as apparently it has a slightly better picture quality and the extras are not far behind the huge amount on the triple Arrow set. To be honest it is a bit of a toss-up, so maybe buy both :)
  • If you want a DVD then go for the Arrow 3-disc dual format set and you'll be set when and if you get a Blu-ray player.
Label:Blue Underground

House on the Edge of the Park (1980)

AKA: La Casa Speruta Nel Parco; La Casa al Confini del Parco; Der Schlitzer
  • The US R1 DVD from Shriek Show/Media Blasters wins in picture quality but the cut (43 seconds) Shameless DVD has a large amount of interesting extras. I'd go for the R1 and if you can afford it get the Shameless as well.
  • If you need a region-free go for the Dutch re-release from EC Entertainment.
  • There is an Italian Blu-ray by CG Home Video (CineKult). The picture quality is supposed to be good but there is no English audio (there are Enlglish subs for Italian audio though) and the extras are in Italian with no subs.
  • Cut in the UK by 43 seconds.
  • Do not buy the Vipco release as it's cut by a hefty 11:43!

Island of Death (1976)

AKA: Ta Pedhia tou dhiavolou; A Craving for Lust; Cruel Destination; Devils in Mykonos; Island of Perversion; Psychic Killer 2
  • There can be only one! The Arrow Blu-ray/DVD combo is the best release of this batshit crazy film.
  • Again do not buy the Vipco release as it's cut by 4:09.

Label:Arrow Video
Format:Blu-Ray/DVD combo

The Last House on the Left (1972)

AKA: Krug & Company; The Men's Room; Night of vengeance; Sex Crime of the Century
  • The MGM Blu-Ray seems to have the best picture and sound out there and has some decent extras.
  • If you want a DVD go for the Metrodome's R2 3 disc "Ultimate Edition". It has amazing extras; even ones that the Blu doesn't have like the alternate "Krug and Company" cut of the film.

Love Camp 7 (1969)

AKA: Lager Femminile; Camp Special No 7; Nazi Love Camp 7
  • I can't find any other release except for the one from Something Weird Video/Siren Visual Entertainment (apart from pirate copies of course).
  • If it's a pirate copy you want then Twisted Danger do one.
  • There is a Japanese release but the quality is just as poor.
  • Banned in the UK so go for an international release.

Nightmare in a Damaged Brain (1981)

AKA: Nightmare; Nightmare in a Damaged Brain; Nightmares in a Damaged Brain; Dark Games; Blood Splash; Schizo
  • Currently the longest version is the Code Red release. The "30th Anniversary Edition" seems to have to most extras including several cuts of the film. They also do a Blu-Ray which only has the one version but several new interviews.
  • 88 Films is releasing a UK Blu-Ray in December.
  • Stay away from the UK Screen Entertainment DVD as it's been butchered. I know, I have it :(

Night of the Bloody Apes (1969)

AKA: La Horror Pilante Bestia Humana; The Horrible Human Beast; Horror and Sex; Horror y Sexo; Gomar the Human Gorilla
  • I'm going to have to go for the Image Entertainment release for this one because of the extras and the fact that it's a double feature alongside "Feast of Flesh".
  • If you need a R2 then go for the Nucleus Films release as it's anamorphic and has a few trailers.

Night of the Demon (1980)

AKA:
  • There doesn't seem to be any top-notch DVD releases available and the closest is the one from Code Red. Note that this was created from a 1" video tape master but is the best source they could find.
  • Any UK version will be cut by 1:41, so don't go buying the Vipco release.

Notes:Includes a "Watch the Movie with Maria Kanellis" option - apparently she does an intro, outro and talks during the film. Sounds irritating if you ask me.

  • Get the region B Arrow Blu-Ray which includes a DVD of the film as well. The DVD may be region-free, I'm not sure.
  • If you need region-free then the OOP R0 Arrow DVD is best as it is completely uncut compared to most of the other releases.
  • Else, try the old R0 Anchor Bay DVD.
  • Synapse have finished a new restoration and hopefully we'll see it for sale in the beginning of 2016. They're also working on new transfers of Phenomona and Suspiria.

  • Ok, I'm going to upset either the Arrow or the Blue Underground fanboys whatever I choose. To be honest both Blu-Rays are stunning and you should just get both :)
  • Just make sure you get the "fixed" Arrow release as the earlier ones had a fuck-up in the branching that lost 6 seconds of the film.
  • Also the Arrow is region locked to B so maybe the Blue Underground is the way to go for non-Europeans without a region-free player.
  • If you want a DVD then both the Arrow (R2) and Blue Underground (R0) releases are available in 2-disc DVD packs.
